For a daily face wash, mature skin usually does best with a gentle, non-drying cleanser chosen for your skin type. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that by your 40s the skin makes much less sebum, the oil that keeps it soft, and by age 60 nearly everyone has dry skin. Everyday products such as deodorant soaps can strip oils and fats from the skin. So the AAD recommends a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that doesn’t contain alcohol.
The five cleansers below are current and linked to exact Amazon listings: two for normal to dry skin, one for oilier skin, a bar, and an exfoliating cleanser. Skin type, format, ingredients, fragrance and directions come from each maker’s page, checked October 9, 2026. Nobody here has used them, so the results described are the makers’ claims.

Best for normal to dry skin: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
If your skin feels tight after washing, start here. CeraVe developed it as a hydrating face wash for “a gentle yet thorough cleanse that won’t leave skin feeling tight or dry,” with three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid that the brand says help restore and maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier. CeraVe says it removes dirt, oil and even makeup, and lists it as suitable for normal to dry skin.
It has the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance, according to CeraVe, and is free of added fragrance and non-comedogenic. The directions follow the AAD’s basics: wet your skin with lukewarm water, lather the cleanser between your palms, massage it on in gentle circles, then rinse well and pat dry.
Best for dry, sensitive skin: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
The Cetaphil is a creamy, non-foaming cleanser that Cetaphil says can be used with or without water. Without water, you apply it, rub gently and remove the excess with a soft cloth, leaving a thin film on the skin.
Cetaphil makes it for normal to dry, sensitive skin, with niacinamide, panthenol and glycerin to reinforce the skin’s natural moisture barrier. The brand says it is clinically proven to provide continuous hydration to protect against dryness, and that it is dermatologist tested and clinically proven to be gentle on sensitive skin. It is fragrance free, paraben free and hypoallergenic, according to Cetaphil, and its ingredient list has 10 ingredients. Cetaphil suggests following it with a serum and then a moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
Best for normal to oily skin: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser
Not all mature skin is dry. For oilier skin, CeraVe describes this as “a gel-based, non-drying foaming cleanser for normal to oily skin” that removes dirt, makeup and excess oil without leaving skin feeling tight or dry. It has the same three ceramides and hyaluronic acid as the hydrating version, plus niacinamide.
CeraVe says it removes dirt, makeup and excess oil for 12-hour oil control and helps maintain the skin’s natural moisture levels. To use it, wet your skin with lukewarm water, massage it on in gentle circles as it foams, then rinse and pat dry. Fragrance isn’t on CeraVe’s ingredient list, but methylparaben and propylparaben are, if you avoid parabens.
Best bar: Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar
If you have always washed with a bar, you don’t have to switch to a bottle, but the kind of bar matters. Dove describes this one as “a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic Beauty Bar for your face, body and hands that gently cleanses and moisturizes dry and sensitive skin.” The brand says it combines mild cleansers with ¼ moisturizing cream and has no sulfate cleansers or parabens.
Dove calls the formula mild and pH neutral and says it is suitable for daily use. It is also dermatologically tested, according to Dove. The Amazon link is a pack of six 3.75 oz bars.
Best for dull, rough-feeling skin: L’Oréal Paris Revitalift 3.5% Glycolic Acid Cleanser
This is the one to try if your skin looks dull rather than dry. L’Oréal calls it “a daily exfoliating cleanser that resurfaces, removes excess oils and makeup to reveal smoother, brighter skin.” It pairs 3.5% glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), with salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). L’Oréal says the formula is non-drying and designed for daily use, and that it is fragrance free and dermatologist tested as suitable for sensitive skin. Its ingredient list includes sodium laureth sulfate and menthol.
Use it with care around the sun. Its label carries a sunburn alert: the AHA may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so L’Oréal says to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure while using it and for a week afterward. The directions are to lather a small amount in wet hands morning and evening, massage it on with a light circular motion, rinse and pat dry, and keep it away from the eye area. How to choose a gentle cleanser for mature skin
Start with your skin type. CeraVe and Cetaphil make their cleansers here for normal to dry skin, and CeraVe makes its Foaming Facial Cleanser for normal to oily skin. The Dove bar is made for dry and sensitive skin. If dullness bothers you more than dryness, the L’Oréal glycolic cleanser adds exfoliation.
Choose fragrance-free if your skin is dry or sensitive. The AAD says dermatologists recommend products labeled “fragrance-free,” and warns that “unscented” products can contain chemicals that hide other odors. Cetaphil, Dove and L’Oréal label these cleansers fragrance free, and CeraVe’s hydrating cleanser is free of added fragrance.
Wash gently. The AAD’s face-washing advice is to wet your face with lukewarm water, apply cleanser with your fingertips rather than a washcloth or sponge, avoid scrubbing, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel. Wash twice a day and after sweating, and apply moisturizer if your skin is dry or itchy.
Remove heavy makeup first if you need to. These are daily cleansers. If you wear long-wear foundation or waterproof mascara, our makeup remover cleansing milk list covers a first cleanse. Whether your next step should be a cleanser or a toner is covered in our cleanser vs toner picker .
Frequently Asked Questions
Is bar soap or a cleanser better for mature skin?
Skip deodorant soaps. The AAD says they can strip oils and fats from the skin and are too harsh for dry, sensitive skin, and dermatologists recommend gentle, fragrance-free products. A mild, fragrance-free cleansing bar is a different product: Dove says its Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar has no sulfate cleansers and a mild, pH-neutral formula. If you prefer a liquid, the two CeraVe cleansers and the Cetaphil cover normal to dry and normal to oily skin, and the L’Oréal adds exfoliation.
How often should I wash my face?
The AAD says to limit washing to twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, plus after sweating heavily.
Can I use a glycolic acid cleanser every day?
L’Oréal designs its 3.5% glycolic acid cleanser for daily use, morning and evening. Its label also carries a sunburn alert: the alpha hydroxy acid may increase sun sensitivity, so use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure while using it and for a week afterward.
