For thin, sparse lashes, start with a tubing mascara that removes with warm water, then switch to a thickening formula only if you want more bulk. Tubing formulas form tiny tubes around each lash rather than coating it, and their makers say they don’t smudge or flake and come off with warm water. That matters when every lash counts. A thickening mascara builds more visible fullness, and the best ones for mature eyes are tested for sensitive eyes.

The five mascaras below are current and linked to exact Amazon listings. Formula type, brush, removal and eye-safety testing come from each maker’s own page, checked October 5, 2026. Nobody here has worn them, so lash results are the makers’ claims.

Best for sensitive eyes: Clinique Lash Power Tubing Mascara

The Clinique has the longest list of eye-safety claims here, which makes it a sensible first try for eyes that water or react. Clinique says it is ophthalmologist tested, “safe for sensitive eyes” and safe for contact lens wearers, and also dermatologist tested, allergy tested and fragrance free. It is a lengthening tubing mascara with 24-hour wear that is smudge-proof and “lasts through sweat, humidity, and tears,” according to the brand.

For sparse lashes, the brush is the useful detail. Clinique says its “unique detailing brush beautifully lengthens even the tiniest lashes.” Removal is with warm water, with no makeup remover needed. Clinique suggests splashing bath-temperature water on the lashes and pressing gently, which means less rubbing at thinning lashes. It comes in Black Onyx and Dark Chocolate.

Best for length: Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions

Thrive’s tubing formula, it says, “precisely wraps each lash in lightweight ’tubes’ that build and extend beyond the lash for maximum length.” The brand describes it as water-resistant, smudge-proof and flake-free all day, and says it slides off with warm water. It adds shea butter and castor seed oil “to condition lashes during wear.”

The shade range is the reason it suits thinning lashes in particular. Thrive sells it in eight shades and says its charcoal gray shade, Whitney, is “especially flattering on thinning lashes or lighter colored hair” because it defines without harsh contrast. The Amazon link is the Rich Black shade, so check the listing’s shade menu or Thrive’s own site for Whitney. Thrive says the formula is dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested and safe for contact lens wearers. For best results it suggests doing one eye at a time and building layers while the mascara is still wet.

Best for holding a curl: blinc Amplified Tubing Mascara

If your lashes are sparse and straight, blinc’s curl advice is the selling point. The brand says to curl your lashes first, because the tubes “form and set around the curled lash,” which “acts like a cast, which holds the curl.” Amplified is its volume-and-length tubing formula; blinc says it “separates lashes and tubes them individually,” and you can build coats.

blinc says the mascara doesn’t flake, which it notes is a common cause of mascara sensitivity, and that its “gentle polymers” give long wear without irritation. It removes with warm water and gentle pressure, no harsh removers needed. blinc lists Black and Dark Brown versions.

Best thickening mascara: Almay Thickening & Tint Mascara

Clinique and Thrive sell their tubing formulas mainly for length. If you want lashes to look fuller, the Almay is the pick. Almay says it “thickens lashes instantly while gradually tinting lashes over time,” with plant-derived powders that “create volume with softness” and a Lash-Caring Complex to condition lashes. The brand calls it flake-free and smudge-proof.

It is also a strong match for sensitive eyes. Almay says the formula is hypoallergenic, ophthalmologist tested, suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, and fragrance-free. Its directions are two coats, stroking from root to tip.

Best classic volume: COVERGIRL Lash Blast Volume Mascara

COVERGIRL sells Lash Blast Volume on one big claim: “10x more volume instantly.” For sparse lashes, what matters more is the brush: COVERGIRL says the “unique spin-shape brush catches and coats even the tiniest lashes.”

COVERGIRL calls the formula hypoallergenic and says it “won’t clump or smudge.” Its directions are to apply it to bare lashes. COVERGIRL’s pages give two different shade counts, so we haven’t listed one.

How to choose a mascara for thinning lashes

Pick tubing for easy removal, volume for fullness. Tubing formulas (Clinique, Thrive, blinc) wrap each lash, and their makers say they don’t smudge or flake and come off with warm water. That means no remover and less rubbing. The volume and thickening formulas (Almay, COVERGIRL) are sold for fuller-looking lashes.

Look for a brush made for small lashes. Clinique and COVERGIRL both say their brushes reach “even the tiniest lashes.”

Check the eye-safety claims. Clinique, Thrive and Almay all say their formulas are ophthalmologist tested and suitable for contact lens wearers. Clinique and Almay add fragrance-free. blinc points out that flaking is a common cause of mascara sensitivity, and all three tubing makers say their formulas don’t flake.

Consider a softer shade. Thrive says gray defines lashes without the harsh contrast of black, and suggests its charcoal gray shade for thinning lashes or lighter hair. Clinique Lash Power and blinc Amplified both come in a dark brown.

Curl before tubing. blinc’s advice is to curl first so the tubes set around the curl and hold it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tubing mascara better for thin lashes?

It can be. The makers say tubing wraps each lash in tubes that don’t smudge or flake and comes off with warm water instead of rubbing. Clinique and Thrive sell theirs mainly for length, so if you want thicker-looking lashes, a volume or thickening mascara like Almay or COVERGIRL may suit you better.

Should I wear black mascara on thinning lashes?

Not necessarily. Thrive Causemetics says its charcoal gray shade, Whitney, is especially flattering on thinning lashes or lighter colored hair, because it defines without harsh contrast. Clinique also sells Lash Power in a dark brown, Dark Chocolate.

Will mascara make my lashes grow?

No mascara here claims to grow lashes. Some makers say their formulas condition lashes or help them look healthier, which is a cosmetic claim. If you are considering a lash serum, see our lash serum review.
