For thinning hair after 50, pick a shampoo that suits your scalp and your color, then treat it as one step in a routine. If you color your hair, start with a color-safe, sulfate-free formula. If your hair is natural and your scalp gets oily, a scalp-focused cleanser makes more sense. No shampoo here is a drug, and the makers’ results are cosmetic claims: fuller-looking hair, less breakage, a cleaner scalp. If your part is widening, the section on when to see a dermatologist covers the non-prescription treatment the FDA has approved for women with female pattern hair loss.
The five shampoos below are current. Four link to exact Amazon listings; the Virtue link is a labeled Amazon search because its full-size listing was out of stock on Amazon on October 9, 2026. Hair type, sulfates, ingredients and directions come from each maker’s own page, checked October 5, 2026. Nobody here has used them, so the results described are the makers’ claims.

Best for color-treated hair: Virtue Flourish Shampoo for Thinning Hair
If you color your hair, the Virtue is the pick with the clearest color-safety statement. Virtue says the shampoo is “color-safe, sulfate-free, and formulated without harsh ingredients, making it suitable for chemically treated or colored hair.” It is meant for “all hair types experiencing thinning hair,” and the brand calls it gentle enough for daily use.
Virtue says the formula “delicately stimulates the scalp and removes buildup,” and uses Alpha and Gamma Keratin proteins, rice-based humectants and plant extracts that it says clear scalp irritation and flaking. It is also paraben-free, vegan and gluten-free, according to Virtue. The brand’s results come from a third-party study of 35 panelists using the full three-product Flourish regimen for 6 months, in which 94% said their hair looked fuller and 91% saw less fall-out. Those figures are what panelists reported about the full routine, not the shampoo alone.
Best drugstore pick for shedding and breakage: Pantene Abundant & Strong Shampoo
Pantene sells Abundant & Strong as step one of a “3 Step Anti-Hair Loss” system with a conditioner and a scalp serum. The brand says the system uses “Pro-Vitamin B5 Complex and Niacinamide,” that it strengthens “the scalp’s hold on hair at the root,” and that it targets “two major causes of hair loss: breakage and shedding.”
For the shampoo itself, Pantene’s claim is narrower: it “cleanses while reducing oxidative stress on the scalp.” Pantene describes the system as a “daily regimen,” and its shampoo page calls the product an Allure 2026 Best of Beauty winner. It comes in a 13.5 fl oz bottle. Pantene’s page doesn’t publish an ingredient list or say whether the formula is sulfate-free, so check the bottle if you avoid sulfates.
Best sulfate-free formula with a published study: Briogeo Destined for Density
Briogeo describes Destined for Density as “a lightweight, density-boosting shampoo” for “all hair types and textures concerned with thinning or loss of density.” The brand names four key ingredients: an energy complex of caffeine, CoQ10 and green coffee oil that it says stimulates the scalp; copper peptides; zinc, which it says normalizes sebum production; and biotin. Briogeo says the formula is sulfate-free, 93% naturally derived, vegan and Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free.
The study detail sets it apart. On the shampoo’s page, Briogeo says hair density increased “by up to 3X” compared to baseline in a 16-week study of 35 participants, and its FAQ ties those results to using the Destined for Density collection consistently. Briogeo describes the texture as a lightweight cleansing gel and the scent as fruit-forward with sandalwood and vanilla notes, which is worth knowing if you prefer fragrance-light hair care.

Best for natural hair and an oily scalp: NIOXIN System 1 Shampoo
NIOXIN numbers its systems by hair type and stage of thinning. System 1 is for “natural, untreated hair with light thinning,” and NIOXIN recommends different numbered kits for color-treated or damaged hair and for progressed thinning. If your hair is uncolored and the thinning is light, System 1 is the match.
NIOXIN says the shampoo is “clinically and dermatologically tested” and gently cleanses to “prevent against follicle-clogging sebum.” Its featured ingredients are wild mint oil, peppermint oil, which NIOXIN says “can assist in regulating sebum production and controlling oiliness,” and salicylic acid, which it says removes dead skin cells, excess oil and product buildup. The ingredient list includes sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. NIOXIN’s directions are to use the complete shampoo, conditioner and leave-on treatment system at least 3 times a week for visible results in 30 days.
Best for volume on fine hair: OGX Thick & Full + Biotin & Collagen Shampoo
If the goal is simply more lift rather than a hair-loss routine, OGX sells this shampoo for that: it says the formula gives “72+ hours of volume & body” and lists fine hair as its hair type. Its page talks about volume and body rather than hair fall, which keeps expectations realistic.
OGX says the formula is made without sulfated surfactants, parabens, phthalates, microplastics and dyes. The Amazon link is the 13 fl oz bottle, and OGX also sells a 25.4 fl oz size.
How to choose a shampoo for thinning hair
Start with your color. If your hair is colored, choose a formula its maker calls color-safe; Virtue states it directly. NIOXIN System 1 is for natural, untreated hair, and NIOXIN points color-treated hair to a different numbered kit.
Then match your scalp. If your roots get oily fast, NIOXIN’s peppermint oil and salicylic acid are aimed at oil and buildup. If your hair is dry, colored or reactive, the sulfate-free options are Virtue, Briogeo and OGX. Our hair care guide for aging hair explains how to match cleansing strength to how quickly your roots get oily.
Expect a routine, not a single bottle. Virtue’s study used three products for 6 months. NIOXIN’s directions are the full system at least 3 times a week. Pantene sells its shampoo as one of three steps, and Briogeo’s FAQ talks about using the collection consistently.
Read results claims carefully. Virtue’s figures are what panelists reported. Briogeo’s figure is “up to” and comes from 35 participants. OGX sells volume, not thinning care.

When shampoo isn’t enough
If your part is getting wider or your ponytail feels thinner, the American Academy of Dermatology says you may have female pattern hair loss, which it calls the most common cause of hair loss in women. The AAD adds that it is more common after menopause, that it tends to progress, and that treatment works best when started at the first sign of hair loss. Other causes can look the same, so the AAD recommends seeing a dermatologist.
The AAD says the FDA has approved minoxidil as a non-prescription treatment for women, at 2% or 5%, and that it is the most-recommended treatment for female pattern hair loss. The FDA Drug Facts label for a 5% minoxidil foam for women lists its use as “to regrow hair on the top of the scalp” and says not to use it if your hair loss is sudden or patchy, or if you don’t know the reason for it. It also says to ask a doctor before use if you have heart disease. The label adds that results may take 3 months of once-daily use, or at least 6 months for some women, and that hair loss begins again if you stop. Read the full label before using any minoxidil product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a shampoo stop hair thinning?
None of these shampoos is a drug. Their makers describe cosmetic results such as fuller-looking hair, less breakage or a cleaner scalp. The American Academy of Dermatology says minoxidil, a non-prescription treatment at 2% or 5%, is FDA-approved for female pattern hair loss and is the most-recommended treatment for it.
Is sulfate-free shampoo better for thinning hair?
Not always. Virtue, Briogeo and OGX are sulfate-free, and Virtue says its formula is color-safe. NIOXIN System 1 lists sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate and is made for natural, untreated hair; NIOXIN says its peppermint oil and salicylic acid help with oil and buildup.
How long does a thinning-hair shampoo take to show results?
The makers give different timelines. NIOXIN says visible results in 30 days when the full system is used at least 3 times a week, Briogeo cites a 16-week study and Virtue cites 6 months of its full regimen. The FDA label for a 5% minoxidil foam for women says results may occur at 3 months of once-daily use, and some women need at least 6 months.
